Dear Editor

I leaned back in my Lazy Boy and thoughts of turkey, pumpkin pie, potatoes with gravy and cranberry sauce filled my head.  As I closed my eyes to give them a rest I heard the sound of some one walking.  I opened my eyes to see a time traveler carrying a United Nations flag waking back through time.

He approached President Washington and said, “We know you endangered your life, marched your soldiers barefooted on icy paths, and fought overwhelming odds to win independence from England.  But sir, you should have taken your case to an international court and allowed them to decide your fate.  This was too important for a small band of misguided patriots to decide.” The nostrils of Washington’s white horse seemed to exhale fire as Washington’s fists clenched, teeth gritted and I could even see the veins grow on that passionate man’s neck. The smug time traveler hurriedly moved on.

Our time traveler then approached John Adams and sweetly asked,  “President Adams, have you reflected on your error of establishing a sovereign nation?  Your actions have caused some of our fellow countrymen to resist the subjection of our constitution to NATO.  I just imagine you are ashamed of what you did now.”   In his most formidable style, Adams leaned his head back and looked down his nose in utter distain for the time traveler.

I was bursting with curiosity as the traveler approached Thomas Jefferson.  “Mr. Jefferson don’t you see now the absurdity of your lambasting King George with such voraciousness.  That diatribe, you called a Declaration of Independence, has been a great obstacle to world peace overseen by a world government.”  The traveler moved on oblivious to the note that Jefferson wrote as he did during the debate over slavery, “I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that His justice cannot sleep forever.”

I listened with baited breath as he approached Alexander Hamilton.  “Mr. Hamilton, I supposed by now you have learned how short sighted you and others were who wrote the Federalist Papers.   Oh, you had such good sounding ideals.  Really a sovereign nation of United States!   Now that we are educated we see the advantage of surrendering our national sovereignty to the United Nations.”  Hamilton clearly appeared to regret that he vowed to never kill another in a duel.

He then approached James Madison.  “Mr. Madison, you were proud of yourself when you insisted the 1st ten amendments be part of the constitution.  What were you thinking?  Freedom of religion?   Don’t you understand, with so many different religions in the world, if any religious sentiments are expressed in public someone will be offended.  We have had to play a little with your words and make it freedom from religion.  We simply cannot allow religious expression in view of the global political culture.  Not only that, James, really, every citizen is to have a right to have a gun!  Why, what if some individual doesn’t approve of the United Nations dictating to his country?  Just think how quicker we could have established a world government if King George had of confiscated all weapons from you war mongers.”  Madison’s mouth popped open in disbelief.

Our traveler approached a small group of African American children.  They were General Stonewall Jackson’s Sunday School Class.  The traveler did not notice they were reading the book of Revelation about the antichrist setting up a one-world government and the terrors that ushered in.  He announced proudly, “Children, don’t fear, we are setting up a world government to deal with the problems of hunger, prejudice, exploitation, and most of all unchecked freedom.”  He looked in amazement as those frighten children ran screaming for their lives.

The time traveler then returned to the 21st century and I listened as he visited his friends.  He spoke to them, “They did not seem to understand that for the good of the world we must surrender national sovereignty.”

With that I awoke from my Thanksgiving Dream.  I am thankful this Thanksgiving day that we are still the United States, a sovereign nation.

 Yours for National Sovereignty
