Dear Editor
Last week we saw a perfect example of politicians using a distorted interpretation of the First Amendment as ammunition in the present war against the Supreme Governor of the universe, God. An article appeared in the Dayton News Paper about two Dayton health clinics. These two health clinics are affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church via a local hospital. One of our country commissioners was quoted as saying that two health clinics would have to get out of the clinic business. They would have to get out the clinic business to protect the separation of church and state. This is an absurd conclusion. What is the accusation against these two health clinics? They do not support safe sex for teen-agers. They will not advise teen-agers how to have safe sex. Have they failed to provide normal medical help to their area? No, they simply do not encourage teens to have safe sex. One wonders how many parents want their children engaging in safe sex. Consider this. It is a felony in our nation for an adult to have safe sex with a child under 15 years of age. Now one of our county commissioners think that it is a violation of the First Amendment for a health clinic, who refuses to promote safe sex for teens, to provide emergency health care for a person who is on public assistance. Yet they do not think it wrong for a health clinic to promote safe sex for those under 15 years of age. They even brag they will not tell the child's parents. Maybe the county should not support simple morality, but they certainly should not fight against it. They should not try to force a health clinic to promote any kind of sexual activity among those whom our own law determines are not old enough to make a voluntary decision about. We must remember that the word safe is only a modifier in the term safe sex. To promote safe sex among teen-agers is still promoting sex among teens. I think that God should have the same rights in our country as the devil and his crowd. It is not supporting the Roman Catholic Church to reimburse them for health care for a person on public assistance. However, it is a prohibition of the free exercise clause to refuse them the same rights as the person who kills pre-born citizens. That is a violation of the First Amendment. In 1866 Dr. W. W. Everts wrote the following in a Catechism for Baptists. Question 58, "What are the chief dangers to a free government?" Answer, "Popular ignorance, party prejudice, a practical atheism. No government can be beneficent whose citizens are in antagonism with the Laws of God. The wisest constitution, in the hands of a wicked nation, may be perverted to 'sublime mechanics of depravity'." Dr. Everts did not have the gift of prophecy, but was only gifted with common sense.
