SUPRALAPSARIANISM:  AN APOLOGY

 A supralapsarian is one who

Believes that God decreed both election and reprobation prior to creation and
then allowed the fall of man as a means of carrying out His divine purposes (Webster)

Believes that Gods’ decrees of election and reprobation logically preceded the

           decree of the fall (Wikipedia)

Believes that God’s decree of both election and reprobation occurred before the

fall (Elwell’s Evangelical Dictionary of Theology)

 An infralapsarian is one who

Believes that the decrees of election and reprobation occurred after the actual fall

 My objections

            1.         These terms are not found anywhere in the Bible

            2.         The concept of a “council of God” that determined this is not found in the Bible

            A discussion of 2nd Timothy 2:14-26

As disciples of Jesus Christ we are not to strive about words to no profit

As disciples of Jesus Christ we are to shun profane and vain babblings for

they will increase unto more ungodliness

As disciples of Jesus Christ we are to avoid foolish and unlearned

                                        questions

            3.         This concept is founded in human reason and thus one cannot be inflexible

                         about it (sort of)

 My defense

  1.         I believe that this concept hinges entirely on the “Sovereignty of God”

A discussion of the Sovereignty of God

God cooperates with created things in every action, directing their

distinctive properties to cause them to act as they do

            1.         There are many things in creation that we think of as merely “natural”

occurrences.  Yet scripture says that God causes them to happen (Psalm 148)

            2.         Scripture affirms that God feeds the wild animals of the field

                                   (Psalm 104:27-29, Matthew 10:29)

            3.         From a human perspective the casting of lots is the most typical of random

events that occur in the universe.  But scripture affirms that the outcome of

such events are from God (Proverbs 16:33)

            4.         Scripture also speaks of God’s providential control of human affairs

                       (Job 12:23, Psalm 22:28, Acts 17:26, Daniel 4:34-35, Romans 13:1-5)

            5.         God also controls all aspects of our lives

                        a.         God plans our days (Matthew 6:11, Philippians 4:19,

                                    Psalm 139:16, Job 14:5, Galatians 1:15, Jeremiah 1:5)

                        b.         God plans our actions (Acts 17:28, Jeremiah 10:23,

                                    Proverbs 20:24, 16:1 and 9)

                        c.         Our success and failure comes from God (Psalm 75:6-7,

                                    Luke 1:52, Psalm 127:3)

                        d.         Our talents and abilities are from the Lord (1st Corinthians 4:7,

                                     Psalm 18:34)

                        e.         God influences rulers in their decisions (Proverbs 21:1,

                                    Ezra 1:1, 6:22, Psalm 33:14-15, Philippians 2:13)

  2.         When was your name placed in the Lamb’s book of life?  (2nd Timothy 1:9,

             Revelation 13:8 and 17:8)

  3.         When were the elect chosen (Ephesians 1:4)

  4.         What does Revelation 13:8 have to say about this issue?
